General Description

The Rasbora cf. Dandia, potentially a variant of R. dandia, is a peaceful species suitable for larger community aquariums. It adapts well to various water chemistries and can coexist with popular fish like other cyprinids, tetras, livebearers, and catfish. Native to Sri Lanka and southern India, this schooling fish thrives in groups of at least six individuals, displaying interesting behaviors during courtship.

Aquarium Setup

The Rasbora cf. Dandia requires a spacious tank with ample open swimming areas and lush vegetation. A tightly-fitted cover is essential due to its jumping tendencies. Mimicking a flowing river environment with rocks, gravel, driftwood, and hardy aquatic plants is recommended. Clean water conditions are crucial for its well-being, necessitating a regular maintenance routine [(see table)].

Behaviour

Being a schooling species, Rasbora cf. Dandia displays enhanced comfort and natural behavior when kept in decent numbers. Male individuals engage in competitive behaviors to attract female attention, enriching the aquarium's dynamics and visual appeal.

Feeding and Diet

In its natural habitat, this species primarily feeds on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. In captivity, it readily accepts a varied diet including live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia. To maintain optimal coloration and condition, supplement its diet with high-quality dried flakes and granules.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Rasbora cf. Dandia is an egg-scattering, continuous spawner showing no parental care. Spawning occurs frequently in well-conditioned adults, with fry appearing in planted aquariums. Mature females are distinguishable by their rounder bellies and slightly larger size compared to males. Ensure a suitable environment for egg protection and hatching to maximize fry yield.

Habitat and Distribution

Found abundantly in Sri Lanka and southern Indian states like Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, Rasbora cf. Dandia inhabits diverse lowland freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams, rice paddies, and ponds. Its distribution showcases adaptability to various environmental conditions within the region.
