General Description:
Described as a polyphyletic lineage, Rasboras are characterized by possessing an unbranched, non-spiny first dorsal fin ray, seven soft dorsal rays, a small mouth not extending below the eye, and lacking barbels. Recent phylogenetic analyses have led to the reclassification of many species formerly under Rasbora into new genera like Boraras, Horadandia, and Trigonostigma.
Aquarium Setup:
For Rasbora Paucisqualis, a minimum tank size of 60 litres with base dimensions of 60 cm x 30 cm or more is recommended. The water conditions should have a pH range of 6.0-7.5, hardness of 2-12°dH, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C.
Behaviour:
Rasboras are known to be peaceful fish that thrive in schools. They exhibit shoaling behavior and feel more secure in the presence of conspecifics or other peaceful species in the aquarium.
Feeding and Diet:
These fish are omnivores and accept a varied diet. In captivity, they can be fed high-quality flake food, live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and micro pellet food to ensure a balanced diet.
Reproduction & Dimorphism:
While specific details on the reproduction and sexual dimorphism of Rasbora Paucisqualis are not provided, it is noted that Rasboras typically breed by scattering their eggs, and males tend to exhibit more intense colors during the breeding season.
Habitat and Distribution:
The Rasbora Paucisqualis species is said to have been described based on a single specimen from the aquarium trade, supposedly imported from the Malay Peninsula. They are believed to be distributed throughout much of Peninsular Malaysia, specifically in states like Johor, Pahang, Selangor, Kelantan, and Terengganu, but are not found in the Mekong drainage region.
