The Rasbora Paviana species is known for its peaceful nature, making it an excellent addition to a larger, well-furnished community tank. It does not have specific water chemistry requirements, allowing for compatibility with a wide range of popular aquarium fish species. This cyprinid fish is gregarious by nature and thrives best when kept in groups of at least six individuals. Maintaining a group enhances their coloration, reduces nervousness, and promotes a more natural display in the aquarium.

Feeding and Diet

Based on stomach analyses of wild specimens, the Rasbora Paviana primarily feeds on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, especially insects. In the aquarium, they accept appropriately sized dried foods but should not be exclusively fed these. Offering daily meals of small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and Artemia contributes to vibrant coloration and encourages breeding behavior in these fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding the Rasbora Paviana in captivity is achievable as they are egg-scattering continuous spawners with no parental care. Encouraging spawning in a densely-planted aquarium may result in the natural appearance of fry. However, to increase fry yield, a controlled breeding setup can be implemented with separate containers dimly lit and fitted with a mesh or plastic matting for egg collection. Mature females are distinguished by their fuller bellies and slightly larger size compared to males.

Habitat and Distribution

The Rasbora Paviana is an adaptable species found in various habitats, including swiftly flowing forest hill streams and slower-moving lowland waters with accumulated leaf litter and silt. This fish is widespread in the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Mae Klong river basins across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Specific recorded locations include the Tonlé Sap river and lake in Cambodia and the Duc My river in Vietnam.

Aquarium Setup

Creating an ideal aquarium environment for Rasbora Paviana involves providing ample open swimming space and maintaining water quality. A large, well-planted tank or a setup resembling a flowing river with rocks, gravel, and driftwood is recommended. The inclusion of aquatic plants such as Java fern and Anubias species is suitable despite the fish's surface-dwelling and jumping tendencies. Water parameters should be maintained within a temperature range of 22-26°C, a pH of 6.0-7.5, and hardness of 2-12 dH.
