General Description

Rasbora rubrodorsalis is a peaceful species suitable for community tanks. It is distinguishable from similar species by a distinct red blotch in its dorsal fin. This schooling fish thrives in groups of 8-10 individuals, displaying vibrant colors during courtship.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for R. rubrodorsalis, it is recommended to provide a well-planted environment with a dark substrate. Behaviour

Being a schooling species by nature, R. rubrodorsalis thrives in a community of its own kind. Keeping them in groups reduces stress and enhances their natural behavior. Males showcase their best colors while competing for female attention during breeding.

Feeding and Diet

This species is a micropredator, feeding on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, a varied diet including live and frozen foods like Daphnia and Artemia promotes optimal coloration and breeding conditions. Supplementary live feedings are recommended for overall health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

R. rubrodorsalis is an egg-scattering spawner without parental care. To increase fry yield, a controlled breeding setup with dim lighting and mesh-covered containers is advised. Males are smaller and more brightly colored than females, especially during spawning.

Habitat and Distribution

Found primarily in the lower Mekong river basin of northeastern Thailand, R. rubrodorsalis inhabits shallow, plant-rich waters like swamps and marshes. Specific details regarding its presence in Laos, Cambodia, and other regions remain uncertain.
