General Description

Rasbora Sarawakensis is a peaceful and attractive species of fish native to Borneo. It belongs to the Cyprinidae family and can grow up to 5.1cm in size. This species is known for its schooling behavior and vibrant colors, especially in males competing for female attention.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Rasbora Sarawakensis, it is recommended to maintain a peaceful community of Southeast Asian/Indian species similar in size. A group of at least 8-10 specimens is ideal for keeping them less nervous and displaying their best colors. Decor choice is flexible, but a well-planted tank with a dark substrate, floating plants, and driftwood to diffuse light is beneficial. The tank should have weak to moderate filtration and the water temperature kept between 22-26°C with a pH of 6.0-7.5 and hardness of 2-12°dH.

Behaviour

Rasbora Sarawakensis is a schooling species by nature, thriving when kept in a group. It exhibits peaceful behavior within the community tank and may compete for female attention by displaying vibrant colors.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Rasbora Sarawakensis feeds on invertebrates both aquatic and terrestrial. In an aquarium, their diet should consist of a variety of foods including dried, live, and frozen options. Regular meals of small live and frozen fare like Daphnia and bloodworms contribute to optimal coloration and can induce breeding behavior.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Rasbora Sarawakensis is feasible in captivity as they are egg-scattering, continuous spawners with no parental care. Females are generally rounder and slightly larger than males. A controlled breeding setup with dim lighting, spawning containers, and specific water conditions can foster successful egg hatching and fry survival.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to Borneo, Rasbora Sarawakensis inhabits slow-moving forest streams with thick vegetation and clear, slightly brown-tinted water. Its distribution spans from Sarawak state in Malaysia to West Kalimantan province in Indonesia, found in river systems like Batang Kayan and Sungai Sarawak.
