Behaviour:

The Dwarf Scissortail Rasbora is a peaceful species but not ideal for community tanks due to its small size and timid nature, thriving best when housed alone or with other diminutive fish. It displays schooling behavior and should be kept in groups of at least 8-10 individuals to reduce nervousness and enhance coloration and natural behavior. In a group setting, males may exhibit vibrant colors and engaging behavior while competing for female attention.

Feeding and Diet:

Being a micropredator, the Dwarf Scissortail Rasbora in the wild consumes small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, it requires a varied diet that includes live and frozen foods like Daphnia and Artemia along with suitable-sized dried foods. Regular feeding of live and frozen fare promotes optimal coloration and encourages breeding behavior.

Reproduction:

As an egg-scattering species without parental care, the Dwarf Scissortail Rasbora spawns continuously, with fry potentially appearing in mature aquariums. To enhance fry survival, a controlled breeding setup with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, dim lighting, and appropriate substrate is recommended. Spawning typically occurs at dawn, with incubation lasting 24-36 hours and fry becoming free-swimming within three days. Providing suitable live food for the fry supports their growth to resemble adults in approximately 12 weeks.

Dimorphism:

Male Dwarf Scissortail Rasboras are visibly smaller and slimmer than females, exhibiting more intense coloring, especially during spawning periods. Males may develop a pinkish hue on their bodies and yellowish fins when ready to spawn.

Habitat and Distribution:

Native to the Lower Mekong River basin in Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, this species inhabits shallow bodies of water like swamps, marshes, and reservoirs with dense submerged vegetation. Notably, the Dwarf Scissortail Rasbora coexists in areas like the Sirindhorn Reservoir in Thailand and the Tonlé Sap Lake in Cambodia. This fish is best suited to well-furnished aquariums with a dark substrate, floating plants, and gentle filtration to mimic its natural habitat.
