General Description

The Mini Dragon Loach, scientifically classified under the Cypriniformes order, is a species that showcases a slender body adorned with four black bars on a yellow base coloration. As a micropredator, it naturally feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton while also consuming minimal plant matter. Found in swiftly-flowing forest hill streams, it is distinct from its relatives within the Schistura genus by its specific physical characteristics, lack of sexual dimorphism, and habitat preferences.

Aquarium Setup

To house the Mini Dragon Loach successfully, it is advisable to recreate a tank environment that mimics its natural habitat. This involves setting up a tank designed to imitate a flowing stream or river, complete with substrate of rocks, sand, gravel, and boulders. Providing ample cover in the form of driftwood branches for hiding spots and utilizing hardy aquarium plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias species attached to the décor can enhance the setup. Due to its preference for clean water, regular 30-50% weekly water changes are essential, along with ensuring optimal dissolved oxygen levels and water movement through the use of power filters, powerheads, or airstones.

Behaviour

Although not prone to schooling behavior, the Mini Dragon Loach tends to thrive better in the presence of similar species and when provided with sufficient cover. It is recommended to keep this species alongside peaceful fishes that inhabit comparable biotopes, such as Microdevario species, while avoiding tank mates that are territorial or overly competitive, particularly bottom-dwellers. Aggression among Mini Dragon Loaches can be minimized when appropriate hiding spaces are available.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Mini Dragon Loaches primarily feed on live microprey like small insects, crustaceans, and worms. In an aquarium setting, they accept a variety of foods but should not be exclusively fed dried foods. Offering daily meals of live or frozen fare such as Daphnia, Artemia, and chopped bloodworms will contribute to vibrant coloration and overall well-being.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information regarding the reproductive behavior of Mini Dragon Loaches remains unreported in current documentation. While no sexual dimorphism has been documented, it is suggested that sexually mature females may appear rounder or thicker-bodied when carrying eggs.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to select tributary streams within the upper Chao Phraya river system in northern Thailand, the Mini Dragon Loach inhabits pristine forest hill streams characterized by swift flow, shallow depths, and substrate comprising of gravel, rocks, and boulders. Frequently sharing its habitat with various sympatric species, conservation efforts are crucial due to threats from activities like over-grazing, deforestation, wildfires, and aquarium trade collection, as the species is considered endangered despite current healthy population levels.
