General Description
The Sundadanio Axelrodi is a miniature species of fish that is moved into the Sundadanio genus from its previous classification as Rasbora axelrodi. It is a schooling fish that thrives in groups of 20-30 specimens, reaching a maximum size of 2.2cm. This fish has not been commonly bred in the hobby due to its specific water condition requirements and sensitivity to fluctuations.
Aquarium Setup
The Sundadanio Axelrodi is best kept in a densely-planted tank with floating plants and driftwood to mimic its natural habitat. A soft, sandy substrate and dried leaf litter can further enhance the natural feel of the tank. Filtration should not be too strong, and dim lighting is preferred to simulate the fish's natural environment. Regular, small water changes are essential to maintain stable water conditions.
Behaviour
This species is peaceful but does not thrive in community tanks due to its small size and timid nature. It is recommended to keep them in groups of comparable species to reduce nervousness and display natural behavior. Male Sundadanio Axelrodi may exhibit colorful displays and compete for female attention within the group.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Sundadanio Axelrodi feeds on small aquatic crustaceans, worms, insect larvae, and zooplankton. They may be picky eaters in aquariums but can learn to accept dried foods over time. Offering live or frozen foods like Artemia nauplii and Daphnia is essential for optimal color and conditioning. Newly-imported specimens may require small live foods initially.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Sundadanio Axelrodi can be challenging due to their sensitivity to water conditions. Successful breeding occurs in heavily-planted, mature tanks with stable parameters below 6.0 pH. Males are more colorful and slimmer than females, exhibiting unique musculature differences for producing sounds during dominance or mating displays.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the Greater Sunda Islands, Sundadanio Axelrodi inhabits blackwater streams and pools in ancient forest peat swamps. Its natural habitat features soft, acidic water with dense vegetation and limited light penetration. This species faces threats from human activities like rubber and palm oil plantations, impacting its fragile ecosystem.
