General Description
The White Cloud Mountain Minnow, scientifically known as Tanichthys albonubes, is a popular species in the aquarium trade. This small cyprinid has several ornamental strains available, such as long-finned, golden, albino, and super red varieties. Unfortunately, inbreeding among captive-bred stocks has led to genetic weaknesses and deformities in some individuals. The species is a schooling fish by nature, with ideal group sizes consisting of 10 or more individuals to reduce nervousness and enhance natural behavior.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, the White Cloud Mountain Minnow thrives in a heavily planted tank with a dark substrate and the addition of floating plants, driftwood, and leaf litter. While not demanding of specific decor, this species displays better coloration in such environments. It appreciates a moderate level of water movement and does well in a hill stream-type aquarium setup. The ideal water conditions include a temperature range of 14-22°C, a pH of 6.0-8.5, and moderate hardness levels ranging from 90-357ppm (see table).
Behaviour
Known for its peaceful nature, the White Cloud Mountain Minnow is an excellent community fish, especially when kept in suitable temperature conditions. It shares compatibility with species like Pethia conchonius, P. padamya, Puntius semifasciolatus, and Macropodus opercularis. This schooling fish exhibits vibrant colors, particularly when males compete for female attention in groups.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, this species primarily feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, they readily accept a diet of small live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia. A high-quality diet of dried flakes and granules, ideally with plant or algal content, helps maintain their health and vibrant colors.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
The White Cloud Mountain Minnow is an egg-scattering, continuous spawner that shows no parental care. In a well-conditioned aquarium, breeding often occurs spontaneously. Controlled breeding can be facilitated by setting up a separate, dimly-lit tank with suitable spawning substrates. Mature females tend to be rounder-bellied and larger than the more colorful males.
Habitat and Distribution
The species' type locality is White Cloud Mountain in China, part of the Pearl River Delta region. Although once feared extinct, relict populations have been found in Guangdong, Quang Ninh, and Hainan provinces, with some genetic segregation indicating potential for phylogenetic studies. White Cloud Mountain Minnows inhabit clear, shallow streams with aquatic vegetation, often alongside species like Macropodus opercularis and Gambusia affinis.
