General Description

Tanichthys Micagemmae, commonly known as the Vietnamese minnow, is a small cyprinid species that gained popularity in the aquarium hobby for its attractive appearance, ease of maintenance, and affordability. It is also referred to as the cardinal minnow, royal white cloud, or dwarf cardinal. The species was discovered in the early 21st century, with various trade names used for sale. Tanichthys Micagemmae is a schooling fish by nature and thrives best in groups of 10 or more individuals.

Aquarium Setup

The Vietnamese minnow can be housed in a well-maintained community tank with a variety of compatible tankmates, including small cyprinids, tetras, livebearers, dwarf cichlids, catfishes, and loaches. In a stream-style tank, suitable companions include smaller species of Danio, Devario, Garra, and many loaches. It is recommended to provide a heavily planted aquarium with a dark substrate, floating plants, driftwood, branches, and leaf litter. A moderate level of filtration and water movement is ideal for this species.

Behaviour

Tanichthys Micagemmae is a very peaceful fish that may become stressed if kept with larger or aggressive tankmates. Maintaining a group of 10 or more individuals reduces individual stress and promotes natural behavior. Male Vietnamese minnows exhibit vibrant colors when competing for female attention, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the tank.

Feeding and Diet

In nature, this micropredator feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, Tanichthys Micagemmae readily accepts a diet of small live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, along with high-quality dried flakes and granules containing plant or algal content. Regular feeding ensures optimal condition and vibrant colors in this species.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Tanichthys Micagemmae is an egg-scattering, continuous spawner without parental care. Breeding can occur frequently in a densely planted aquarium, resulting in the appearance of fry. Controlled breeding can be achieved in a separate, dimly-lit tank with suitable substrate for egg collection. Sexing mature specimens is easier, with females typically larger and rounder-bellied. Males intensify in color during spawning or competition, often developing extended dorsal and anal fins.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is native to the Ben Hai river system in north central Vietnam, specifically in the province of Quang Tri. It inhabits fast-flowing, shallow streams with clear water and sandy substrates. Tanichthys Micagemmae is found in marginal areas with reduced water flow. The natural habitat includes sympatric species like Microcobitis misgurnoides, Yunnanilus cruciatus, and Macropodus opercularis.
