General Description
The Glowlight Rasbora, scientifically known as Trigonopoma pauciperforatum, is a small member of the Cyprinidae family, with a maximum size of approximately 6.0cm. This species is also commonly referred to as the "redline" rasbora due to the coloration of its lateral stripe, which can vary from deep orange to golden. The fish may exhibit a secondary, darkish stripe beneath the primary one, with variations in intensity and length based on multiple factors.
Aquarium Setup
For the optimal care of Glowlight Rasboras, a tank size of at least 80 litres is recommended. These fish tend to display their best colors in well-planted tanks with a dark substrate. A natural aquascape with driftwood, roots, and branches providing ample hiding spots is ideal. Adding dried leaf litter to the setup can enhance the natural environment and serve as a secondary food source for fry.
Behaviour
Glowlight Rasboras are suited for peaceful community tanks, ideally with similarly-sized cyprinids, small loaches, and certain anabantoids. Boisterous tankmates should be avoided as they may outcompete the rasboras for food.
Feeding and Diet
In their natural habitat, Glowlight Rasboras are micropredators, feeding on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, they thrive on a diet of small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, along with high-quality dried flakes and granules.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Glowlight Rasboras are egg-scattering free spawners with no parental care. Females are generally rounder-bellied and slightly larger compared to the slimmer, more vividly patterned males. In well-maintained aquariums, they tend to spawn regularly, leading to the appearance of fry.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and the Greater Sunda Islands of Borneo and Sumatra, Glowlight Rasboras inhabit blackwater streams and rivers associated with ancient forest peat swamps. They prefer habitats with low light penetration, dark-brown stained water, and minimal dissolved mineral content. In the wild, they coexist with a variety of fish species in diverse ecosystems such as the Kapuas River basin in Borneo.
