General DescriptionThe Lambchop Rasbora, scientifically known as Trigonostigma Espei, is a peaceful schooling species that thrives in community tanks and exhibits bright coppery-reddish coloration. It is often confused with similar-looking species, such as T. heteromorpha and T. hengeli but can be distinguished by its unique body markings. This small cyprinid belongs to the Cyprinidae family and typically grows up to 3 cm in length.

Aquarium SetupFor optimal care, the Lambchop Rasbora should be kept in a group of at least 8-10 individuals in a well-furnished tank with a dark substrate. Maintaining dim lighting and adding plant species like Microsorum and Cryptocoryne is recommended. The water temperature should range from 23-28°C with a pH of 5.5-7.5 and hardness between 18-179ppm (see table for more details).

BehaviourThis species is known for its peaceful nature, making it an excellent addition to a community tank. When kept in decent numbers, Lambchop Rasboras exhibit less nervous behavior and display their best colors while competing for female attention. They are schooling fish by nature and thrive in the company of their own kind.

Feeding and DietThe Lambchop Rasbora is a micropredator that feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton in the wild. In the aquarium, they readily accept small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, complemented with quality dried flakes and granules.

Reproduction & DimorphismThese Rasboras do not exhibit parental care and follow a unique spawning method where eggs are attached to the undersides of broad leaves or objects. To encourage successful breeding, conditioning the adults with live and frozen foods is essential. Mature females are slightly larger and rounder-bellied compared to the colorful males.

Habitat and DistributionInhabiting forest streams with submerged plants, the Lambchop Rasbora is commonly found in sections of streams with soft, weakly acidic to neutral water. They are native to Thailand's southwest and southeast regions, extending to parts of Cambodia and Vietnam. The coloration of these fish can vary based on their specific locality, with different populations displaying distinct hues.
