General Description
Pachypanchax arnoulti, also known as Arnoult's panchax, is a relatively small freshwater fish belonging to the family Aplocheilidae. It can grow up to 8.0cm in length and is characterized by its chubby appearance compared to other panchax species. This fish is endemic to Madagascar and the granitic Seychelles, with some populations translocated to Zanzibar.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care of Pachypanchax arnoulti, an aquarium of at least 80 litres is recommended. The water parameters should be maintained within a pH range of 6.0-7.5, with a temperature between 20-28°C and a moderate hardness of 36-179ppm. The setup should include live plants, aquatic mosses, or synthetic mops where the fish can deposit their eggs, as well as sufficient refuges to accommodate group maintenance.
Behaviour
Arnoult's panchax is generally peaceful, although smaller fish may be preyed upon. Due to its conservation status, it is best kept alone to avoid hybridization. If maintained in a group, providing adequate hiding spots in the aquarium is crucial. While rival males may engage in occasional fights, severe physical harm is rare.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, P. arnoulti feeds on a variety of aquatic and terrestrial insects. In the aquarium, it is an uncomplicated eater and accepts quality dried foods, live/frozen fare such as bloodworms, Tubifex, and Daphnia, as well as wingless fruit flies and tiny crickets if gut-loaded. Ensuring a diverse diet is essential for the overall health of the fish.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Pachypanchax arnoulti is relatively straightforward, with the fish depositing eggs among plants or artificial spawning surfaces. Males exhibit larger size, extended fins, and vibrant colors compared to females. It is recommended to spawn them in a group with sufficient hiding places for fry to evade adult predation.
Habitat and Distribution
The natural habitat of P. arnoulti includes various water bodies in western Madagascar, such as river systems and streams. Unfortunately, populations have declined significantly since the 1950s due to habitat destruction and competition from non-native species like swordtails and mosquitofish. The species is currently classified as a species of special concern by the World Conservation Union.
Etymology
The genus name Pachypanchax is derived from the Greek word "pachy," meaning "thick," and the generic name "Panchax," alluding to the fish's robust appearance compared to typical panchax species.
