Its distribution is limited to the coastal plains on both sides of the border between Cameroon and Nigeria, including regions like the Korup and Cross River National Parks.
Aquarium Setup
The aquarium setup for Aphyosemion bivittatum should reflect its natural habitat, with a preference for densely planted tanks and subdued lighting. It is advisable to provide hiding spots using driftwood and plants. Water parameters should mirror those in its native environment, with temperatures around 22-26°C and slightly acidic to neutral pH levels (6.0-7.0).
Behaviour
Aphyosemion bivittatum is known for its peaceful temperament, making it suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species. Males may display territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods, so providing sufficient space and hiding spots is essential to prevent aggression.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Aphyosemion bivittatum feeds on small invertebrates, insects, and plant matter. In a home aquarium, they can be fed a varied diet that includes high-quality flake or pellet food, as well as live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to mimic their natural feeding habits.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
The reproduction of Aphyosemion bivittatum involves the female laying eggs which are then fertilized by the male. The species is known for its beautiful courtship displays where males show off their vibrant colors to attract females. Males typically have more striking colors compared to females.
Habitat and Distribution
Aphyosemion bivittatum is native to the coastal plains near the border of Cameroon and Nigeria, including regions like the Korup and Cross River National Parks. It prefers slow-moving streams, swamps, and areas with dense vegetation where it can find food and shelter. The species is often found in areas close to water sources like rivers and streams, with a habitat that includes aquatic plants and leaf litter for cover.
