General Description
The Aphyosemion Herzogi, belonging to the family Nothobranchiidae within the Cyprinodontiformes order, is a petite species with a maximum size reaching 4.5cm. This fish originates from the northern parts of Gabon but can also be found in Equatorial Guinea, southern Cameroon, and various river tributaries in Gabon.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for the Aphyosemion Herzogi, it is crucial to replicate its natural habitat conditions. Maintaining a temperature range of 15-20°C, a pH level between 5.0-6.5, and water hardness of 0-90ppm is essential for their well-being. For further details on aquarium setup requirements, refer to the table below.
Behaviour
Known for their peaceful demeanor, Aphyosemion Herzogi fish tend to exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods. They are relatively active swimmers, showcasing vibrant colors and intricate patterns, adding aesthetic value to aquarium tanks.
Feeding and Diet
Aphyosemion Herzogi is primarily carnivorous, thriving on a diet rich in small live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. It is important to provide a varied diet to ensure proper nutrition and overall health for these fish.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
During the breeding season, male Aphyosemion Herzogi fish intensify their colors to attract females and establish territories. The females produce relatively fewer but larger eggs compared to other fish species of similar size. Males and females display distinct coloration and fin differences, aiding in easy differentiation.
Habitat and Distribution
Originally described from regions near Zoumoukou in northern Gabon, the Aphyosemion Herzogi has a broader distribution encompassing parts of Equatorial Guinea, southern Cameroon, and specific river drainages in Gabon, such as the Ivindo and Okano, both tributaries of the Ogooué system.
