General Description

The Aphyosemion Ogoense, commonly known as the Broken-Line Killifish, is not an annual fish like some of its relatives, preferring permanent bodies of water in its natural habitat. This species has various forms, with popular ones in the aquarium trade including A. o. ottogartneri and A. o. pyrophore. Care must be taken not to mix different forms in aquariums to avoid hybridization.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, the A. ogoense requires a tank with dense planting and other decor to provide hiding spots. Floating plants should be added to diffuse light, as this species is prone to jumping. The tank should be tightly covered to prevent these agile fish from escaping. Water conditions necessitate a pH range of 5.0-6.5, hardness between 0-143ppm, and a temperature of 18-22°C. For more detailed setup requirements, refer to the table.

Behaviour

A. ogoense can thrive in a community tank if tankmates are carefully chosen to avoid competition and matched for temperature compatibility. However, due to their specific needs, it's often recommended to keep them in a species-only setup to ensure their well-being and to prevent any hybridization risks.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Broken-Line Killifish prefer small live or frozen foods like Daphnia or bloodworms, but they can adapt to high-quality flake food in captivity. Offering a varied diet is key to keeping these fish healthy in an aquarium environment.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding A. ogoense involves selecting the best male and female after conditioning them separately. Spawning requires specific conditions like slightly acidic water, low lighting, and suitable spawning mediums such as peat moss or spawning mops. Eggs are removed regularly, with incubation methods including water or peat moss. Males exhibit vibrant colors and longer fins compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

The Broken-Line Killifish is primarily found in small streams under forest cover. It was described from the M'Passa River in southeastern Gabon, with its range extending into the northern and central Republic of the Congo. These natural habitats provide a glimpse into the species' preferred environment and geographical distribution.
