General Description
The Splendid Killifish, scientifically known as Aphyosemion Splendopleure, is a species classified under the category of aplocheiloid-toothcarps within the order Cyprinodontiformes. It is a small fish with various color forms depending on its collection locality, and caution must be taken not to mix these forms to prevent hybridization. Males display more vibrant colors and possess longer fins compared to females, with the species typically reaching a size of 6.0cm.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, a minimum tank size of 30 liters is recommended for the Splendid Killifish. The aquarium should include a dark substrate like peat moss, ample planted areas, driftwood for hiding spots, and floating plants to dim the lighting. Behaviour
Known to be shy and not suitable for community tanks, the Splendid Killifish does not thrive in competition with other species. Territorial behavior may occur among males of the same species, but physical harm is seldom inflicted during such interactions.
Feeding and Diet
This fish primarily feeds on small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia and bloodworms. However, they can also accept high-quality flake food. Providing a varied diet is essential for their overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction of the Splendid Killifish is relatively easy and often involves a spawning method termed egg 'hanging.' Males exhibit striking colors and longer fins compared to females. Breeding should be monitored closely to ensure the well-being of the fish, as the process can be strenuous, particularly for the female.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Splendid Killifish inhabits slow-moving regions of small streams. Their distribution spans from the southeastern portion of Nigeria, through western Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, to northwestern Gabon. The specific type locality of this species has been identified as Tiko in southwestern Cameroon.
