General Description
The Red-Striped Killifish, scientifically known as Aphyosemion Striatum, is a beginner-friendly killifish species characterized by its attractiveness, ease of breeding, and relatively long lifespan compared to annual species within the genus. It can be identified by specific physical traits such as 9-10 dorsal-fin rays, 12-14 anal-fin rays, and unique color patterns on the fins and body. Adult males of this species are larger, more vibrantly colored, and have longer fins than females.
Aquarium Setup
To house Aphyosemion Striatum, a dark substrate and dense planting are recommended, along with wood pieces for cover. Floating plants can be added to diffuse light and prevent excessive jumping, as this species is known to be skilled jumpers. The tank should have a secure cover to prevent escape. The water conditions suitable for these fish include a pH range of 6.5-7.5, a temperature between 20-26°C, and a hardness level of 54-215 ppm.
Behaviour
The Red-Striped Killifish is peaceful and somewhat shy, making it important to choose tankmates carefully to avoid more vigorous fishes out-competing them. Ideal companions include tetras, cyprinids, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras catfish, small Loricariids, and peaceful Anabantoids that are large enough not to be considered prey.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Aphyosemion Striatum mainly feeds on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. In a captive setting, they prefer small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia or bloodworms, although they will also accept high-quality flakes. Variety in the diet is essential for their overall health and well-being.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Successful breeding of Aphyosemion species, including A. Striatum, can be achieved through various methods in aquarium settings. It is recommended to condition a male and two females separately before introducing them into a breeding tank. The eggs are usually deposited in the substrate or vegetation and can be artificially incubated. Adult males display more intense coloring and longer fins than females.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Aphyosemion Striatum inhabits perennial lowland rainforest streams, pools, and freshwater swamps. These killifish are primarily found in the area between the lower Mitmele River in Equatorial Guinea and the lower Ogooué basin in Gabon, including various coastal drainages like the Mbei, Komo, and Gabon watersheds. The species' distribution is centered around western Africa.
