General Description

The Girardinus Metallicus, commonly known as the Metallic Girardinus, is a species that reappeared in the aquarium trade in 1965 and has been accessible from specialist breeders since. This small fish boasts a maximum size of 6.0cm and can be occasionally found in aquatic shops. It falls under the Poeciliidae family and is native to the habitats of Costa Rica and Cuba, typically inhabiting streams, ponds, and ditches with stagnant and occasionally brackish water conditions.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care of Girardinus Metallicus, a well-planted aquarium with floating cover is recommended. Water parameters should ideally be medium hard and either alkaline or brackish. The species requires a minimum tank size of 40 litres and thrives in water with a pH range of 6.5-8.0, hardness level of 8-20°dH, and a temperature between 22-27°C.

Behaviour

Known for its peaceful demeanor, the Metallic Girardinus flourishes in brackish environments, hence careful selection of tankmates is crucial. In hard freshwater conditions, compatible companions include sturdy corydoras, tetras, and small rainbowfish. In a brackish setup, they can coexist with bumblebee gobies and other small species.

Feeding and Diet

Being omnivorous, the diet of Girardinus Metallicus should incorporate small frozen, live, and dried foods rich in vegetable content. Feeding a variety of high-quality food ensures their nutritional needs are met.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of Girardinus Metallicus is relatively straightforward, avoiding soft, acidic water conditions. With males being smaller in size than females, possessing a distinct gonopodium, and featuring a black stripe from the mouth to the gonopodium, clear sexual dimorphism is observed. Gestation lasts around 24 days, yielding broods of 15-30 fry. Consider maintaining a female-heavy ratio and providing ample planting for breeding success.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, the Metallic Girardinus can be found in various water bodies in Costa Rica and Cuba, favoring stagnant water sources that are sometimes brackish. Their natural habitats include streams, ponds, and ditches characterized by these specific environmental conditions.
