General Description
The Golden Black Molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a striking member of the Poecilia genus, known for its distinctive coloration featuring a golden anterior body and a black posterior. Typically reaching sizes less than 3 inches, this small Molly is characterized by its playful and energetic demeanor. With a peaceful temperament, they make a lovely addition to freshwater aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
The Golden Black Molly thrives in brackish aquariums and prefers hard, alkaline water conditions. It necessitates a tank size of at least 30 gallons to provide ample space for swimming. Water parameters should ideally be maintained with a pH level between 7.0-8.0, a temperature range of 20.0-27.8°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 10-25.
Behaviour
Displaying a peaceful temperament, Golden Black Mollies are known to be active and lively swimmers. They exhibit social behavior within their group and generally get along well with tank mates. It's essential to provide them with plenty of hiding spots and swimming space to ensure their well-being.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Golden Black Mollies have a diverse diet that should consist of both meaty foods and algae. Their food should include algae-based flake food, freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp. Offering a balanced diet is essential to keep these fish healthy and vibrant.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Golden Black Mollies, like other Mollies, are prolific breeders with high growth rates. They are livebearers, meaning their offspring are born alive. Females can store sperm for several months, leading to multiple broods from a single mating. Male and female Mollies can be distinguished by the modified anal fin, which is termed the gonopodium, present only in males.
Habitat and Distribution
The Golden Black Molly is native to freshwater habitats in Central America, particularly Mexico. These Mollies are adaptable and can be found in various water bodies such as streams, ponds, and canals within their natural range. They prefer warm waters and are commonly seen in densely vegetated areas.
