General Description
The Long-Nosed Distichodus, scientifically known as Distichodus Lusosso, is a captivating species within the Distichodus genus. Particularly eye-catching in its juvenile form, this fish unfortunately undergoes a fading of its vibrant colors and patterns as it matures. Resembling the more prevalent D. sexfasciatus, the Long-Nosed Distichodus sets itself apart with its smaller adult size and distinctively narrow, pointed head.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care of the Long-Nosed Distichodus, a tank size of at least 275 litres is recommended (see table). An unsuitable choice for planted tanks due to its tendency to consume greenery, it is advised to decorate the aquarium with smooth rocks and driftwood branches. Substrates like sand or gravel can be utilized, with plant options such as Anubias and Bolbitis being safer choices. Adequate water flow is appreciated by this species, alongside the necessity of a securely-fitted, sturdy cover to prevent jumping.
Behaviour
The behavior of the Long-Nosed Distichodus can be somewhat unpredictable, with individual specimens exhibiting varying temperaments. While some individuals coexist peacefully with similarly-sized tankmates, others may display aggressiveness as they mature. It is not advisable to house this species with significantly smaller or timid fish. Group housing can mitigate potential aggression, provided there is sufficient space. Suitable tankmates in a large aquarium include bichirs, large characins, cyprinids, catfish, and Loricariids.
Feeding and Diet
As an omnivorous species, the Long-Nosed Distichodus accepts a wide array of foods and should be provided with a balanced diet. Offering a mix of live and frozen options such as earthworms, prawn, mussels, frozen peas, Spirulina flake, and blanched spinach is beneficial. Including a decent proportion of vegetable matter in its diet contributes to the fish's overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Details regarding the reproduction of the Long-Nosed Distichodus remain unrecorded within the hobbyist community, leading to a mystery surrounding sexual dimorphism in this species.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Long-Nosed Distichodus inhabits large rivers within regions including Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Adapting to varied water conditions, this species thrives within a pH range of 6.5-7.5, hardness of 2-20°dH, and temperatures between 22-26°C.
