General Description
The Elongate Mouse Catfish (Leptodoras Linnelli) is a peaceful species, perfect for a community tank setup with slightly larger South American species that thrive in flowing water. It typically schools in nature and prefers companionship of its own kind. This catfish can be distinguished by a unique thin, ridge-like growth near its dorsal fin.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, a tank setup with fine sand substrate, occasional boulders or driftwood, and minimal bright lighting to replicate its natural habitat is recommended. A powerful filtration system with water flow and floating plants for dim lighting conditions is ideal. Water parameters should be maintained at pH 5.8-7.0, hardness of 5-18°dH, and a temperature range of 18-22°C (see table).
Behaviour
Not aggressive, but small tankmates might be seen as food. Elongate Mouse Catfish thrives with similar-sized peaceful species and prefers schooling for comfort. They are most active during nighttime feeding.
Feeding and Diet
These catfish have an omnivorous diet, accepting dried pellets, algae wafers, granular foods, and live or frozen foods. During acclimatization, feed them just before lights out and ensure a balanced diet for their overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction details remain unknown in captivity. While sexual dimorphism is unconfirmed, mature females likely have a broader body than males.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Elongate Mouse Catfish are commonly found in northern South American river drainages such as Rio Casiquiare in Venezuela, Rio Essequibo in Guyana, and Rio Uatumã in Brazil. They prefer sandy riverbeds with a steady flow of water.
