General Description

The Fog Talking Catfish, scientifically known as Rhinodoras boehlkei, is a species from the Doradidae family native to the Upper Amazon basin in parts of Eastern Ecuador and Peru. With a maximum size of approximately 13.0cm, this species is described as fairly easy to keep and is often recommended as a suitable addition to larger community tanks due to its unaggressive nature.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care of the Fog Talking Catfish, a tank setup of at least 108 litres is recommended. Due to its shy and nocturnal behavior, it is advised to keep the tank dimly lit. Providing numerous hiding spots such as clay flowerpots, plastic piping, and driftwood is essential. While plants are not obligatory, they can help reduce the amount of light reaching the tank's bottom and offer additional coverage. Additionally, installing a red light above the tank can encourage the catfish to forage for food as it cannot perceive red lightwaves.

Behaviour

Known for its non-aggressive demeanor, the Fog Talking Catfish may consume smaller fish, making it unsuitable for general community setups. However, it can coexist peacefully with larger, non-territorial species like medium-sized characins, cyprinids, anabantoids, livebearers, and certain cichlids. This species is tolerant of its own kind, allowing for group housing without significant issues. Multiple individuals often share shelters during the day, with minimal physical altercations occurring.

Feeding and Diet

The Fog Talking Catfish is an omnivorous species that readily accepts a varied diet. Sinking pellets or tablets serve as a staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms and small earthworms. Initially, individuals may feed primarily after dark, but most will eventually adapt to foraging during feeding times.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reports on the breeding behavior of the Fog Talking Catfish within the hobby are scarce. As such, details regarding sexual dimorphism remain unknown.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, the Fog Talking Catfish is commonly found seeking refuge among roots or submerged logs in flowing rivers and tributaries within the Upper Amazon basin, specifically in regions of Eastern Ecuador and Peru.
