General Description

Rhynchodoras Woodsi, commonly known as the Parrot Doradid, is a rare and intriguing species recognized for its inquisitive feeding habits and a distinct bony growth extending from its upper mouthparts. Belonging to the Doradidae family, this species is endemic to the Rio Marañón basin in Ecuador, typically inhabiting sheltered areas among roots or sunken logs in flowing rivers and tributaries. With a maximum size of 11.0cm, this fish thrives in a dimly lit, nocturnal environment, displaying a preference for hiding places and a moderate water flow in the tank.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care of the Parrot Doradid, a tank of at least 100 liters is recommended. The species benefits from a dimly lit environment with plenty of hiding spots like clay flowerpots, plastic piping, and driftwood. While not essential, plants can reduce direct light and provide additional cover. Maintaining water conditions of hardness between 2-12ºdH, pH levels of 5.8-7.0, and a temperature range of 24-26°C are ideal for the well-being of this species. It is advisable to add food after lights out to accommodate its nocturnal feeding habits.

Behaviour

Despite its peaceful nature, the Parrot Doradid may struggle to compete for food with other bottom-dwelling species. It is best suited to habitats with placid tank mates such as small to medium-sized characins, cyprinids, anabantoids, livebearers, and cichlids. When kept in groups, they exhibit tolerance towards their conspecifics, often sharing the same refuge during the day with minimal aggression observed.

Feeding and Diet

As an omnivorous species, the Parrot Doradid is easy to feed, primarily accepting sinking pellets or tablets as a staple diet. Supplementing their food with live or frozen options like bloodworms and small earthworms enhances their nutrition. Reports suggest that this species exclusively feeds under the cover of darkness, emphasizing the importance of offering food after the lights are out.
