General Description

Caelatoglanis zonatus is a species of catfish in the family Erethistidae native to the Ataran River system in Kayin state, Myanmar. The species is characterized by its chisel-like shape and belted, girdled color pattern.

Aquarium Setup

To successfully house Caelatoglanis zonatus in an aquarium, it is recommended to replicate its natural habitat. This includes a tank with flowing water, a mixed sand and rock substrate, submerged driftwood, and leaf litter. Additionally, providing ample hiding spots and areas with moderate water flow will help mimic the conditions of its native environment (see table).

Behaviour

Caeltoglanis zonatus is known to be a shy and reclusive species, often hiding among driftwood or rocks. They are generally peaceful towards tank mates but can become territorial if space is limited. Due to their nocturnal nature, they are most active during the night.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Caelatoglanis zonatus primarily feeds on small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic matter found in the substrate. In a home aquarium, they can be fed a diet of sinking pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and other small live or frozen foods suitable for bottom-dwelling fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information regarding the specific reproductive behavior of Caelatoglanis zonatus in a home aquarium setting is limited. In their natural habitat, these catfish are egg layers and exhibit sexual dimorphism, with females typically being larger and rounder than males.

Habitat and Distribution

Natively found in the Ataran River system in Kayin state, Myanmar, Caelatoglanis zonatus inhabits forest-shaded headwaters with clear, well-oxygenated waters. The substrate consists of a mix of sand and rocks, dotted with submerged driftwood and leaf litter. The Ataran River system is also home to diverse fish species like Acanthocobitis pictilis, Botia kubotai, and Schistura vinciguerrae, among others.
