General Description

The Erethistes Maesotensis, now commonly classified under the Hara genus, is a small and rarely traded species. It showcases outwardly pointing denticles on its pectoral fins, indicating its probable classification as a Hara. This species is a fascinating addition to an Asian stream community tank.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Erethistes Maesotensis, a minimum tank size of 40 litres is required. The tank should be decorated with smooth rocks and driftwood, and a sandy substrate is recommended to accommodate the fish's burying behavior. Ensure well-oxygenated water and keep in mind that the species is nocturnal, so a brightly lit tank may result in rare sightings. Detailed water conditions include a pH range of 6.0-7.0, hardness between 2-12 dH, and a temperature of 20-24°C (see table).

Behaviour

This species of fish is generally harmless and tends to spend the majority of its time either buried in the substrate or seeking shelter in caves. It can coexist well with small reophilic Asian species like rasboras, danios, devarios, and balitorine loaches. However, it is essential to avoid overcrowding the tank with too many bottom-dwelling species to prevent competition for food. Erethistes Maesotensis may exhibit territorial behavior amongst its own kind, so providing refuges for individual fish is recommended.

Feeding and Diet

Feeding Erethistes Maesotensis is relatively straightforward as it readily accepts small live, frozen, and dried foods in aquarium settings. In their natural habitat, these fish primarily feed on small invertebrates. If the tank is artificially lit, it is advisable to offer food after lights out to ensure the fish receives its share of nourishment.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

There is limited information available regarding the breeding of Erethistes Maesotensis in aquarium conditions. However, it is noted that mature females of this species tend to have a broader appearance compared to males.

Habitat and Distribution

Erethistes Maesotensis is known to inhabit shallow, fast-flowing waters with a rocky substrate. This species is native to a single tributary of the Salween River situated on the border between Myanmar and Thailand.
