General Description
The Red Wolf Fish, scientifically known as Erythrinus Erythrinus, is a species of fish characterized by its variable coloration and pattern, with different populations exhibiting distinct genetic differences. This species, also referred to as the rainbow wolf fish or red hi-fin wolf fish, boasts a modified swim bladder serving as an auxiliary breathing organ, enabling it to survive in oxygen-deficient or stagnant waters. A distinctive behavior seen in some juvenile specimens from French Guiana involves mimicking the color pattern of female Rivulus killifish to attract unsuspecting males.
Aquarium Setup
To provide an ideal environment for the Red Wolf Fish, it is recommended to house it in a densely planted tank with abundant floating vegetation, allowing for the display of its natural behavior. While it can adapt to unplanted tanks, ensuring ample hiding spots and refuges is crucial. A securely fitting cover is essential, as these fish are prone to escaping if given the chance. Behaviour
Despite its intimidating appearance, the Red Wolf Fish can coexist with similar-sized species in a large aquarium. However, to observe its natural behaviors without interference, keeping it as a solitary specimen is advisable. This species displays territorial aggression towards conspecifics, often engaging in fights resulting in fatal outcomes, and preys on smaller fish within its vicinity.
Feeding and Diet
In its natural habitat, the Red Wolf Fish feeds on insects and fish. When kept in an aquarium, its diet should primarily consist of meaty foods such as earthworms, prawns, mussels, and white fish like lancefish. While some specimens may eventually accept dried foods, many hobbyists opt for live feeder fish, although this practice presents risks of disease transmission and parasite introduction, with minimal nutritional benefits.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction of the Red Wolf Fish has not been successfully achieved in captivity, thus information on sexual dimorphism is limited. However, mature females are likely to exhibit a rounder belly compared to males, suggesting potential physical distinctions between the sexes.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in regions such as Peru, French Guiana, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, and Brazil, the Red Wolf Fish inhabits various aquatic environments like small tributaries, swamps, marshes, and forest lake margins. It is commonly spotted in shallow waters or concealed amidst surface vegetation, showcasing its adaptability to diverse habitats.
