Behaviour

Annamia Normani is described as largely peaceful but may exhibit occasional squabbles, particularly with certain loach species. In nature, they are known to live in large aggregations, so it is recommended to keep them in groups of at least eight individuals to help reduce shyness when kept in captivity. Suitable tankmates include species from genera such as Barilius, Opsarius, Discherodontus, Garra, and larger Devario. Providing a suitable environment with appropriate companionship is crucial for their well-being.

Feeding and Diet

Traditionally considered micropredators feeding on insect larvae, adult A. normani have been observed grazing on cyanobacteria in their natural habitat. To replicate their diet in captivity, a combination of foods such as Spirulina, chironomid larvae, bloodworms, Tubifex, and Artemia is recommended. Additionally, maintaining a tank with surfaces covered in aufwuchs is beneficial for their grazing behavior. It is crucial to ensure newly acquired or emaciated specimens receive a consistent supply of suitable foods until they can compete with other tankmates.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

While the reproductive behavior of Annamia Normani is presumed to be seasonal in nature, breeding attempts in captivity have been unsuccessful. Sexually mature females typically exhibit a slightly larger and fuller-bodied appearance compared to males. However, concrete information regarding breeding habits and sexual dimorphism remains limited.

Habitat and Distribution

In their natural habitat, Annamia Normani inhabits shallow, swiftly-flowing stretches of streams and rivers with rocky substrates. The Duc My River in central Vietnam is a typical habitat, characterized by rocky riffles, rapids, and pools with minimal aquatic vegetation. Unfortunately, many of the habitats of these fish are at risk due to planned hydroelectric projects. The species is primarily distributed in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, including areas not connected to the Mekong River. Their preferred habitats are environments with crystal clear water, a temperature of around 86°F (30°C), and a pH of 7.4, where they coexist with various sympatric species.

Aquarium Setup

Creating a tank environment that mimics their natural habitat is essential for the well-being of Annamia Normani. A minimum tank size of 160 litres is recommended to provide ample space for their group behavior. Setting up the aquarium with a combination of gravel, sand, rocks, and driftwood to resemble a river or stream environment is ideal. Suitable aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias can be added, along with bright lighting to promote aufwuchs growth. Regular water changes and high oxygen levels are crucial, and maintaining clean water conditions is vital for their health and vitality.
