General Description

Although there exist almost 20 described members of the genus, only Beaufortia cyclica is well-known in the aquarium trade. They have specialized morphology adapted to life in fast-flowing water, with a flattened head and body and horizontally oriented paired fins that form a powerful sucking cup, allowing them to cling tightly to solid surfaces. Beaufortia species are obligate dwellers of shallow, fast-flowing, highly-oxygenated headwaters and minor tributaries.

Aquarium Setup

For a successful aquarium setup for Beaufortia cyclica, it is crucial to maintain clean and well-oxygenated water, ideally with a turnover of 10-15 times per hour. The base substrate can consist of gravel, sand, or a mixture of both, along with water-worn rocks and pebbles. Aged driftwood can be added, but new pieces should be avoided to prevent tannin leaching. Exposed filter sponges are useful as additional grazing surfaces. Adaptable aquatic plants such as Microsorum, Crinum, and Anubias spp. can be included for cover and algae growth. A tightly-fitting cover is necessary as these fish can climb glass, and stable water conditions are vital.

Behaviour

Beaufortia spp. are not aggressive fish, but their environmental requirements somewhat limit the choice of suitable tankmates. They are adapted to fast-flowing water, where they crawl over and under rocks. Researching suitable tankmates before purchase is essential to ensure peaceful cohabitation.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Beaufortia cyclica likely feeds on benthic algae and associated micro-organisms. In captivity, they accept good-quality dried foods, live or frozen bloodworms, and custom-made gelatin-bound foods high in vegetables and Spirulina. Providing algae-covered rocks and surfaces is important for their long-term health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Details on the reproduction of Beaufortia cyclica are unrecorded. Sexual dimorphism in this species is unconfirmed, but in closely related species like B. kweichowensis, females are broader with a rounded snout, while males are slighter with a squared snout.

Habitat and Distribution

Beaufortia cyclica is known from localities in the Xi River drainage in southern China and the Tuoniang river system in southeastern Yunnan province. They inhabit shallow, highly-oxygenated headwaters with rocky substrates and rich biofilm, favoring clear, oxygen-saturated water for their survival.
