General Description
Beaufortia Szechuanensis, a member of the Gastromyzontidae family, is known for its specialized morphology suited for life in fast-flowing waters. With horizontally oriented paired fins, flattened body and head, and fused pelvic fins forming a sucking cup, these fish cling to solid surfaces. The ability to swim in open water is reduced, making them adept at navigating rocks. Native to the Upper Yangtze River basin in Sichuan province, southwestern China, they are characterized by specific physical traits differentiating them from similar species.
Aquarium Setup
Maintaining Beaufortia Szechuanensis in captivity requires a mature tank with sufficient algae-covered surfaces. Providing a diverse diet that includes benthic algae and microorganisms is vital. Tank setup should incorporate clean, oxygenated water with a high turnover rate, a mix of sand and gravel substrates, rocks, and aged driftwood. Strong lighting promoting algae growth, adaptable aquatic plants, and a tightly-fitting cover are essential. Regular water changes and promoting biofilm growth are crucial for the well-being of these fish.
Behaviour
Beaufortia Szechuanensis are not aggressive but have specific tankmate requirements. Suitable companions include certain barbs, rasboras, gobies, and catfish species. Potential harmless squabbles may arise with certain loaches. Researching tankmate compatibility is recommended. Notably, they do not thrive in the company of goldfish.
Feeding and Diet
Their natural diet consists of benthic algae and microorganisms. In captivity, they accept dried foods, live or frozen bloodworms, and vegetal-based homemade feeds. Care should be taken to avoid excessive protein intake. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fresh vegetables and algae is essential for their long-term health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information on the reproductive behavior of Beaufortia Szechuanensis in aquaria is scarce. Sexual dimorphism details are lacking, although closely related species exhibit distinctions in body shape and head structure between males and females.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in shallow, fast-flowing, oxygen-rich tributaries of the Upper Yangtze River basin in Sichuan province, these fish dwell in habitats with rocky substrates and minimal aquatic vegetation. Clear, oxygen-saturated water supports the growth of biofilm, a primary food source. Temporary turbidity during heavy rainfall may occur due to increased water flow and suspended material dislodgment.
