General Description

The Erromyzon Sinensis, a member of the Gastromyzontidae family, is an extremely rare bottom-dwelling fish with specialized morphology adapted for life in fast-flowing water. This species, with its powerful sucking cup formed by horizontally oriented paired fins, is excellent at clinging to solid surfaces and has reduced swimming abilities.

Aquarium Setup

For keeping Erromyzon Sinensis, an aquarium of a minimum of 90 liters is required. The tank should have clean, well-oxygenated water with a turnover rate of 10-15 times per hour. A substrate of gravel or sand with water-worn rocks and pebbles is recommended. Aged driftwood can be added along with some aquatic plants like Microsorum, Crinum, and Anubias spp. to provide cover. It is essential to have stable water conditions, a tightly-fitting cover, and regular water changes to maintain a healthy environment for this species.

Behaviour

The Erromyzon Sinensis is generally peaceful but has territorial tendencies towards conspecifics. It thrives better in groups of four or more individuals and requires their presence for optimal well-being. While largely peaceful, the environmental requirements of this species may limit the choice of suitable tankmates. Suitable tankmates include certain species of Barilius, Garra, Devario, Rasbora, Gobies, and Catfishes.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Erromyzon Sinensis feeds on benthic algae and associated micro-organisms. In captivity, they accept dried foods, live or frozen bloodworms, and a diet rich in fresh vegetables and Spirulina. Maintaining an aquarium with a good supply of algae-covered surfaces is ideal for their long-term health. Some individuals may require a constant source of suitable foods to recover if purchased in a weakened state.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Although breeding this species in captivity is unrecorded, observations of a related congener show complex mating behaviors. Nuptial males defend territories and engage in specific movements to stimulate mating. After spawning, the eggs are fertilized and left in the substrate without additional care. The sexual dimorphism is undocumented, but larger, heavier specimens are presumed to be female.

Habitat and Distribution

Erromyzon Sinensis is native to the Xi Jiang system in southern China, primarily within the Guangxi Autonomous Region. These fish inhabit shallow, fast-flowing headwaters with substrates of rocks, sand, and gravel. The water is clear and oxygen-saturated, supporting the growth of a rich biofilm. The species is also likely found in neighboring Guangdong and possibly Hunan Provinces.
