General Description

Gastromyzon aeroides is a species of loach within the family Gastromyzontidae, distinguished by its angular gill slit, brown body color with cream reticulate pattern on the head, and blue-colored fins in life. These loaches are uniquely adapted to fast-flowing water, with horizontally oriented paired fins and fused pelvic fins forming a suction cup structure.

Aquarium Setup

To adequately house G. aeroides, a clean and well-oxygenated aquarium environment is crucial. Essential setup components include an oversized filter for water turnover of 10-15 times per hour, a substrate mix of gravel and sand with water-worn rocks, aged driftwood, and plants like Microsorum and Anubias spp. A strong light source is necessary for algae growth, a key part of their diet.

Behaviour

G. aeroides is highly peaceful but can be territorial, with some individuals being more protective of their space. They exhibit interesting behaviors in loose aggregations and tend to occupy specific feeding spots in the aquarium. These loaches are adapted to cling to solid surfaces and navigate swiftly flowing waters.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, G. aeroides likely feeds on benthic algae and micro-organisms. In captivity, a diet of high-quality dried foods, live or frozen bloodworms, and homemade gelatin-bound foods rich in vegetables and Spirulina is suitable. Adequate algae-covered surfaces in the aquarium are vital for their long-term health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Limited information exists on the breeding of G. aeroides in captivity. Observations of closely related species suggest that adult females may be larger and heavier-bodied than males, with the differences more pronounced when viewed from above or below. Successful breeding attempts have involved specific tank conditions and suitable diet provisions.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to northern Borneo, G. aeroides is found in swift, shallow streams with clear, oxygen-rich water. They typically inhabit riffles and runs, often above or below waterfalls, amidst gravel, rocks, and biofilm-covered surfaces. These loaches coexist with various species in the Bornean hill regions, displaying habitat specificity within different river drainages.
