General Description

Gastromyzon Introrsus is a species of freshwater fish belonging to the family Gastromyzontidae within the order Cypriniformes. They can grow up to 9.5 cm in size and are known for their specialized morphology adapted to life in fast-flowing water.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Gastromyzon Introrsus, it is crucial to ensure clean, well-oxygenated water with a turnover rate of 10-15 times per hour. A substrate of gravel or sand, along with water-worn rocks and pebbles, should be provided. Additionally, aged driftwood can be added along with adaptable aquatic plants like Microsorum, Crinum, and Anubias spp. to provide cover and attract algal growth.

Behaviour

Gastromyzon Introrsus are very peaceful fish but can be territorial to some extent, with individuals showing varying degrees of protectiveness over their space. They are often seen in loose aggregations and tend to position themselves facing the flow of water in their habitat.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Gastromyzon Introrsus feed on benthic algae and micro-organisms. In captivity, they accept dried foods, live or frozen meaty items, and homemade gelatin-bound foods rich in vegetables and Spirulina. Providing a mature aquarium with algae-covered rocks is essential for their long-term health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Gastromyzon Introrsus in captivity is challenging and has not been extensively documented. Observations of breeding attempts with related species involve creating suitable tank conditions, such as temperature adjustments and abundant live food. Adult females may appear heavier-bodied and slightly larger than males.

Habitat and Distribution

Natively found in the Padas and Labuk river basins in western Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, *Gastromyzon Introrsus inhabits swift, shallow streams with rocky substrates and rich biofilm. They are endemic to Borneo, with some species limited to specific river basins or sub-basins.
