General Description

The Gastromyzon Sp. 'Sk01' is an undescribed species with an intricate classification system within the Gastromyzontidae family. It possesses specialized morphology adapted for life in fast-flowing water, including a flattened body, horizontally oriented paired fins, and fused pelvic fins forming a powerful sucking cup for clinging to solid surfaces. Members of the genus are endemic to Borneo and typically inhabit swift, shallow streams in hill regions, with a preference for oxygen-rich water and substrates covered in biofilm.

Aquarium Setup

A minimum tank size of 60 litres is recommended, with an emphasis on clean, well-oxygenated water. The setup should include a substrate of gravel or sand mixed with water-worn rocks and pebbles. Aged driftwood can be added, but new pieces should be avoided to prevent tannin leaching. Strong lighting is essential to promote algae growth, which serves as a vital food source. Aquatic plants such as Microsorum and Anubias spp. can be included, and regular water changes are crucial to maintain stable conditions.

Behaviour

Gastromyzon Sp. 'Sk01' is known for its peaceful nature, but its territorial tendencies may vary among individuals. It is recommended to house them with small, peaceful tankmates such as certain cyprinids, stream-dwelling gobies, and rheophilic catfish. They exhibit interesting behavior in loose aggregations and may display protective behaviors over feeding territories within the aquarium.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, the species likely feeds on benthic algae and microorganisms. In captivity, they accept dried foods, live or frozen bloodworms, and homemade gelatin-bound foods with a high proportion of vegetables and Spirulina. Maintaining a mature aquarium with algae-covered surfaces is crucial for their long-term health. Supplemental feeding may be necessary in community tanks with herbivorous fish competing for algae.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding observations for Gastromyzon Sp. 'Sk01' in aquariums are limited. Successful spawning attempts involved creating specific tank conditions, such as increased temperature and nutrient-rich diets. Adult females tend to be heavier-bodied and slightly larger than males, with differences more noticeable when viewed from above or below.

Habitat and Distribution

The species is known only from the Sungai Jorong in Kalimantan Selatan province, Indonesian Borneo. Gastromyzon Sp. 'Sk01' thrives in swift, shallow streams with gravel or rocky substrates and a rich biofilm covering solid surfaces. They are typically found in partially shaded areas, facing into the flow in riffles and runs, contributing to the ecosystem of their unique habitat.
