Behaviour

Sewellia spp. are dominant within the 'sucker belly' group of loaches but are not aggressive towards dissimilar-looking fishes. They can typically coexist with small pelagic cyprinids, stream-dwelling gobies, and rheophilic catfishes. Interestingly, they are territorial to a certain extent, with some individuals more protective of their space, often a prime feeding spot, indicating a gender-based dominance. Dominance battles among individuals are common in a belly-to-belly stance. It's recommended to keep them in groups of 6 or more to observe their natural behavior and reduce the likelihood of subdominant fish being targeted.

Feeding and Diet

The natural diet of Sewellia spp. consists mainly of benthic algae and associated micro-organisms, supplemented with insect larvae opportunistically. They can be fed with home-made foods rich in fresh vegetables, Spirulina, and similar ingredients. Mature aquariums with ample algae-covered rocks are ideal for their long-term well-being. In cases where natural algae growth is insufficient, maintaining a separate tank to grow algae can be beneficial.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Sewellia spp. are considered one of the easiest loach species to breed in aquarium conditions. Successful breeding often involves providing suitable, mature substrates for eggs to develop safely. Courtship involves male-initiated fluttering displays and chasing of the female, culminating in egg and milt release. Once fry are visible, providing appropriate-sized food is crucial for their growth. Sexually mature males develop raised tubercles on their pectoral fins, while females have a broader body and a unique snout shape, helping differentiate between the sexes.

Habitat and Distribution

Restricted to shallow, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated headwaters and tributaries with rocky substrates, Sewellia Speciosa is commonly found in the Xe Kong river drainage in Vietnam, Laos, and parts of Cambodia. Their habitat features clear, oxygen-rich waters, rich biofilm carpets covering surfaces, and an absence of aquatic plants. They are known to coexist with other rheophilic species in their natural environment.

Aquarium Setup

For housing Sewellia spp., it is crucial to maintain clean, well-oxygenated water with ideal turnover rates and ample filtration. Aged driftwood and artificial lighting encouraging algae growth are beneficial in the tank setup. Aquatic plants like Microsorum, Crinum, and Anubias spp. can be added for cover. Stable water conditions and regular maintenance, including partial water changes, are necessary for their well-being. A tightly-fitting tank cover is recommended as these loaches can climb glass surfaces.
