General Description
The Lagoon Shrimp Goby, scientifically known as Cryptocentrus cyanotaenia, is a marine Goby characterized by a greenish-yellow body and fins. Brown patterning adorns its body and fins, sometimes appearing in a striped pattern on the fins. Adding to their allure are the short blue iridescent linear markings on their head and at the base of their pectoral fins.
Aquarium Suitability
With a maximum size of 5 inches, the Lagoon Shrimp Goby is suitable for community tanks with other peaceful fish of similar size and water requirements. However, they can be territorial with their own species, making it essential to monitor their interactions in a shared tank.
Demands
Categorized as a moderate-care species, these gobies thrive in saltwater aquariums with a deep sand or gravel substrate that allows them to burrow and sift for food. It is recommended to have a tight-fitting lid or canopy to prevent them from escaping.
Care and Hardiness
The Lagoon Shrimp Goby is rated as a peaceful species suitable for community tanks. They are carnivores and should be fed a diet of live and frozen foods such as Mysis and brine shrimp, along with other meaty offerings placed on the tank's sand for them to forage.
Reef Suitability
These Gobies are considered safe for reef tanks and can contribute positively to the tank's ecosystem. Their peaceful temperament and feeding habits make them compatible with most reef inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
To provide a suitable environment for the Lagoon Shrimp Goby, set up a saltwater tank with a minimum size of 113 liters that includes a deep substrate for burrowing. Maintaining water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) level of 8-12 is vital for their well-being.
Behaviour
These gobies are generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards members of their own species. Observing their interactions and providing adequate hiding spots can help minimize any aggression in the tank.
Feeding and Diet
As carnivorous fish, the Lagoon Shrimp Gobies require a diet rich in live and frozen foods like Mysis and brine shrimp. Offering a variety of meaty treats placed on the substrate encourages their natural foraging behavior and ensures a balanced nutritional intake.
Dimorphism
There is limited information available on the dimorphism of Lagoon Shrimp Gobies or their captive reproduction. Further research may be needed to explore these aspects of their biology.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Cryptocentrus cyanotaenia, or the Lagoon Shrimp Goby, can be found in tropical marine environments, particularly in lagoons and shallow coastal areas. Their distribution ranges across certain regions, contributing to the biodiversity of these ecosystems.
