General Description
The Tangaroa Goby, scientifically known as Ctenogobiops tangaroai, is a stunning species originating from the Indo-Pacific region. Exhibiting an opaque body adorned with red and white flecks, this goby boasts a strikingly long dorsal fin that is predominantly black in color.
Aquarium Suitability
This species proves to be an excellent addition to a passive fish-only or reef aquarium setup, where it can potentially establish a symbiotic relationship with a pistol shrimp. Typically peaceful, the Tangaroa Goby is well-suited for tanks of 10 gallons or more, provided there is an ample supply of live rock and a substrate of sand. While generally peaceful towards other shrimp gobies, territorial behavior might lead to occasional conflicts, especially in smaller tanks or when housed with conspecifics.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Categorized as a moderately demanding species, the Tangaroa Goby requires a meat-based diet consisting of mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and diced table shrimp. Regular feeding at least once a day is recommended to maintain its health and vitality.
Reef Suitability
Reef enthusiasts will find the Tangaroa Goby a compatible inhabitant for their setups. This species harmoniously coexists with corals and other invertebrates within a reef environment, making it a versatile choice for reef aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
To ensure the well-being of the Tangaroa Goby, aquarists should maintain stable water conditions with a pH level ranging between 8.1-8.4, a dKH of 8-12, and a salinity level of 1.020-1.025. Providing ample hiding spots, such as live rock caves and a sandy substrate, mimics its natural habitat and aids in reducing potential stress.
Behaviour
Known for its peaceful temperament, the Tangaroa Goby typically exhibits docile behavior within the aquarium. While it may share burrows with other species like pistol shrimp, occasional territorial disputes can occur, particularly with conspecifics in confined spaces.
Feeding and Diet
Being a carnivorous species, the Tangaroa Goby thrives on a diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp enriched with vitamins, and chopped table shrimp. Regular and varied feeding sessions are essential to meet its dietary requirements and promote overall health.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Tangaroa Goby can be found in the Indo-Pacific region, dwelling amongst coral reefs and sandy substrates. Its natural habitat preferences underscore the importance of replicating these conditions within the aquarium to ensure its well-being and longevity.
