General Description

Rhinogobius filamentosus is a species within the Gobiidae family, characterized by preopercular and posterior oculoscapular canals, a unique postorbital region pore, and 5-8 scales between the first dorsal and pectoral fins. Belonging to the Rhinogobius genus, it exhibits traits typical of the R. brunneus group and widely resides in various regions of continental Asia and the Western Pacific.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank setup mimicking a flowing stream is recommended, featuring rocks, sand, fine gravel, water-worn boulders, driftwood, and terracotta pipes. Decorate with aquatic plants like Microsorum or Anubias species and maintain spotless water with 30-50% weekly changes. Ensure sufficient oxygen and water movement with power filters, powerheads, or airstones, and maintain water conditions with a pH range of 6.0-8.0 and a temperature of 18-25°C.

Behaviour

Adaptable to flowing water conditions, Rhinogobius filamentosus displays territorial behavior and may not thrive in polluted environments. They are known to adhere to rocks and surfaces using their fused pelvic fins, forming a pelvic disc.

Feeding and Diet

As opportunistic carnivores, these gobies feed on small invertebrates and crustaceans in the wild. In aquariums, they accept small live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, mosquito larvae, Artemia, and Daphnia, preferring these over dried foods.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Rhinogobius filamentosus exhibits varied reproductive strategies depending on their environment, with amphidromous and non-diadromous types based on their habitat. Males of the species show extended primary dorsal fin rays, a characteristic sign during the breeding season.

Habitat and Distribution

Commonly found in smaller rivers, tributaries, and streams in Asia, Rhinogobius filamentosus habitats include gravel, rocks, boulders, and exposed bedrocks with fluctuating water flow rates and depths. Their distribution spans regions in countries like Russia, Korea, China, and the Philippines.
