General Description

Rhinogobius lentiginis, commonly known as Lentiginous Goby, belongs to the family Gobiidae and falls under the classification order Perciformes. It is a small species with a maximum size of 3.2cm and has distinct features that differentiate it from other species within the genus, like the number of dorsal-fin rays and scale rows.

Aquarium Setup

For housing Rhinogobius lentiginis, a tank size of at least 60 litres is recommended. The species thrives in water conditions with a hardness of 36-268 ppm, a pH range of 6.0-8.0, and a temperature between 16-24°C. The aquarium should be decorated with substrates like gravel, rocks, and boulders reminiscent of its natural habitat. An assortment of small live or frozen foods such as chironomid larvae, Artemia, and Mysis should be provided (see table).

Behaviour

Lentiginous Gobies are known to exhibit varied behavior based on their environment. Those in rivers connected to the sea tend to be amphidromous, while landlocked individuals display non-diadromous behavior. They possess pelvic fins that form a 'pelvic disc,' aiding them in sticking to surfaces underwater.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Rhinogobius lentiginis is an opportunistic carnivore, feeding on small invertebrates and crustaceans. When kept in an aquarium, they should be offered a diet consisting of small live or frozen foods. While they may accept dried foods after acclimatization, these should not be their primary source of nutrition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Males of Rhinogobius lentiginis exhibit sexual dimorphism, with images suggesting the development of extended rays in the first dorsal fin. The species showcases different reproductive strategies based on their habitat, with sea-connected individuals being amphidromous and landlocked ones being non-diadromous.

Habitat and Distribution

The Lentiginous Goby is endemic to Zhejiang province in eastern China, specifically found in river systems like Cheng-Tang, Ling, and O. It inhabits smaller rivers, tributaries, and streams with varying water flow rates, depth, and turbidity, favoring substrates of gravel, rocks, and exposed bedrock.
