General Description

Rhinogobius nantaiensis, commonly known as the Nantai Rhinogobius, is a species of fish belonging to the Gobiidae family. It is similar in appearance to Rhinogobius candidianus but is smaller in size with a more rounded snout and distinctive spot-like markings on the head. This species typically feeds on small invertebrates and crustaceans in its natural habitat.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Rhinogobius nantaiensis, it is important to replicate a flowing stream environment. The tank should have a substrate of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and water-worn boulders. Providing driftwood branches, terracotta pipes, and plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias spp. can create hiding spots and mimic natural habitat. Regular water changes of 30-50% and good water quality are essential. Maintaining dissolved oxygen levels and water movement with power filters or airstones is recommended.

Behaviour

Rhinogobius nantaiensis is a peaceful and social species that can be kept in a community aquarium. They are territorial with their own kind but can coexist with suitable tankmates that do not exhibit aggressive behavior. The presence of conspecifics is beneficial for their well-being. Males actively require the companionship of female counterparts to prevent listlessness and inactivity.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Rhinogobius nantaiensis is an opportunistic carnivore, feeding on small invertebrates and crustaceans. In an aquarium setting, they should be offered a diet of small live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, mosquito larvae, Artemia, and Daphnia. Though they may eventually accept dried foods, a varied diet with live or frozen options is preferable.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

The male Rhinogobius nantaiensis guards the eggs, which are typically deposited on the ceiling of a cave or crevice until hatching. Spawning is secretive, and males defend their chosen site. Adult males develop distinctive whitish-orange primary ray in the first dorsal fin, absent in females. Gravid females may display visible bluish egg masses.

Habitat and Distribution

Nantai Rhinogobius is native to small rivers, tributaries, and streams of southern and western Taiwan. These habitats feature substrates of gravel, rocks, and boulders with varying water flow rates. The species inhabits areas with seasonal variations in depth and turbidity. The subtropical monsoon climate of Taiwan provides the ideal conditions for Rhinogobius nantaiensis to thrive.

Distribution

The distribution of Rhinogobius nantaiensis is not fully understood. It is commonly imported alongside R. candidianus, a similar species found in northern and western Taiwan. The Nantai Rhinogobius is officially known to inhabit tributaries of the middle and upper Tzengwen and Kaoping river basins in southern Taiwan.
