General Description

Species: Rhinogobius Rubromaculatus
Family: Gobiidae
Order: Perciformes
Common Name: Red-Spotted Goby
Max Size: 5.5cm

This species of goby occurs in different color forms, with variations in body coloration and spot patterns. The common name "Red-Spotted Goby" is derived from the presence of intense red spots on the body, with variations based on the location of the fish. There are some distinct populations found in Taiwan, Japan, and mainland China, with unique characteristics such as egg size, body markings, and genetic variances.

Aquarium Setup

Keeping Rhinogobius Rubromaculatus in a tank resembling a flowing stream is recommended. A setup with variably-sized rocks, sand, fine gravel, water-worn boulders, and driftwood creates a suitable environment. Providing hiding spots with driftwood branches, terracotta pipes, and plant pots is crucial. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum or Anubias can be added. Water quality is essential, and regular water changes are necessary to prevent organic buildup. Maintaining dissolved oxygen levels with power filters, powerheads, or airstones is recommended.

Behaviour

The Red-Spotted Goby can be kept in a community tank with careful selection of tank mates. They are generally peaceful and can coexist with species like Tanichthys, Danios, Rhinogobius spp., small characins, and poeciliid livebearers. They are territorial with conspecifics but require the presence of their kind to thrive. Larger, territorial fishes should be avoided, and suitable tank mates for the bottom include small loaches and torrent-dwelling fish. Avoid mixing with other Rhinogobius spp. due to potential hybridization uncertainties.

Feeding and Diet

Rhinogobius Rubromaculatus are opportunistic carnivores feeding on small invertebrates and crustaceans. In the aquarium, they should be fed small live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, mosquito larvae, Artemia, and Daphnia. While they may accept dried foods after acclimation, these should not be the primary diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding can occur year-round in aquariums, with males guarding eggs deposited on ceilings of caves. The male selects and defends a spawning site, and spawning activity is secretive. Eggs are relatively large, and the brood size can vary. Males exhibit more colorful patterns with extended fins compared to females. Gravid females will show visible eggs inside the body.

Habitat and Distribution

The Red-Spotted Goby is endemic to Taiwan, primarily found in central and western parts of the island. Their habitat includes low to mid-elevation tributary and headwater streams with slow water flow and rocky substrates. They inhabit streams in humid, subtropical regions at elevations up to 1200m AMSL. Specific populations of this species exist in rivers like Tadu and Linbian in Taiwan, showing variations in morphology and color patterns.
