General Description

"The Goldbreast Goodeid, scientifically known as Ilyodon Furcidens, earns its species name due to its fork-shaped teeth and the potential development of a cervical hump as it matures. These fish exhibit less size disparity between sexes compared to other livebearers, likely attributed to the primitive structure of their andropodium. Notably, Goodeids, including the Goldbreast Goodeid, nourish their young through a specialized structure called trophotaenia, akin to a placenta in mammals."

Aquarium Setup

To house I. furcidens successfully, a planted aquarium with floating cover, smooth rocks, and a good water flow is recommended. The species thrives in well-oxygenated water with a temperature range of 18-24°C, a slightly alkaline pH of 7.0-8.0, and water hardness between 10-20°dH. For more details, refer to the provided water conditions table.

Behaviour

Goldbreast Goodeids are generally peaceful dwellers suitable for community tanks as long as tankmates can withstand lower temperatures. While males may engage in occasional scuffles, severe physical harm is rare. These fish exhibit social behaviors and may exhibit flock spawning in a breeding setup.

Feeding and Diet

As omnivorous eaters, Goldbreast Goodeids readily accept various foods but have a particular affinity for algae due to their natural diet. It is advised to include greenstuffs in their diet to ensure proper nutrition and mimic their natural feeding habits.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Goldbreast Goodeids is relatively easy, with females requiring separate matings for each brood of young. Gestation typically lasts 7-8 weeks, yielding a sizable brood of 5-50 large fry. Male Goodeids are smaller, more colorful, and possess an andropodium, a unique feature aiding in reproduction.

Habitat and Distribution

Goldbreast Goodeids, native to the states of Jalisco and Colima in Mexico, inhabit fast-flowing streams and small rivers characterized by diverse biotopes. Their natural habitat preferences should be replicated in aquarium setups to ensure their well-being and reproduction.
