General Description
The Xenotoca Eiseni, commonly known as the Redtail Goodeid, Orangetail Goodeid, or Redtail Splitfin, is an adaptable and hardy species that exhibits less sexual dimorphism compared to other livebearers. With a maximum size of 7.0cm, these fish are native to Mexico and can be found in various habitats ranging from clear mountain streams to polluted roadside ditches.
Aquarium Setup
To best accommodate the Redtail Goodeid, a densely planted aquarium with a dark substrate is recommended. The water parameters should ideally be a pH range of 6.0-8.0, hardness of 10-20 dH, and a temperature between 15-30°C. The minimum tank size required is 55 litres, allowing the fish to display their vibrant colors effectively.
Behaviour
The behavior of the Redtail Goodeid is unpredictable, with some individuals proving to be suitable for community tanks while others may display aggressive tendencies. They have been observed to nip fins and even attack and kill other species, especially catfish. Due to this behavior, it is suggested to keep them in a species-only tank to prevent any aggression towards tankmates.
Feeding and Diet
Redtail Goodeids have an unfussy diet and will readily accept most foods offered to them. Providing a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, pellets, live, and frozen foods will help maintain their health and vibrancy.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding the Redtail Goodeid is relatively easy as they are livebearers. Mating can occur in a species aquarium using a single pair or a group. Females do not store sperm and must be mated for each brood of young. Gestation lasts 7-8 weeks, after which 5-50 large fry are produced. The male displays more coloration and develops a higher back as it matures. They also possess an andropodium for reproduction.
