General Description
The Zebra Knifefish (Gymnotus Pedanopterus) is a stunning species from the Gymnotidae family, known for its rarity in the hobby and commanding a high price when available. It belongs to the genus Gymnotus which has seen significant taxonomic revisions in recent years, with over 20 new species described since 1994. This fish produces a weak electric field using specially adapted muscle tissue near the tail and possesses electroreceptors that enable it to sense movements and navigate in darkness.
Aquarium Setup
A minimum tank size of 108 litres is recommended for the Zebra Knifefish, which prefers a setup that includes cover such as large stones, bogwood, twisted roots, and live plants. Weak lighting or floating plants to diffuse light are advised as this species is more active in dim conditions. Water parameters should be maintained at a temperature of 22-28°C, a pH level between 6.0-7.0, and a water hardness of 2-12°dH (see table).
Behaviour
The Zebra Knifefish is territorial with conspecifics, requiring a large tank to house more than one specimen. It can be combined with similar-sized fish like large cichlids, Characins, Cyprinids, and catfish but should be kept away from boisterous or aggressive species to prevent it from becoming withdrawn.
Feeding and Diet
Offering live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, prawns, earthworms, and tubifex is recommended for the Zebra Knifefish as they do not usually accept dried foods. Ensuring a varied diet with these options is essential for their health.

Habitat and Distribution
