General Description

Hemiodus Argenteus, a member of the Hemiodontidae family, is a peaceful species known for its intimidating presence towards smaller or quieter tank mates due to its size and activity levels. Typically, it is best kept in groups as it is a shoaling species by nature. This species, found in Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and Brazil, thrives in floodplain rivers and lakes, reaching a maximum size of 23.5cm.

Aquarium Setup

For a suitable tank setup for Hemiodus Argenteus, a biotope arrangement is recommended. This setup should include a substrate of inert sand, driftwood branches, and roots for hiding spots. Floating vegetation can help reduce skittish behavior. The species also adapts well to fully planted environments. It is crucial to maintain well-oxygenated water and a secure cover due to its leaping ability. Tank conditions must be closely monitored as Hemiodus Argenteus is sensitive to water quality.

Behaviour

Hemiodus Argenteus can initially exhibit skittish behavior in aquariums, especially when introduced. However, when kept in larger numbers, they tend to settle down over time. Being a shoaling species, they thrive in groups and are compatible with similarly-sized tank mates such as characins, cichlids, catfish, and Loricariids. Their peaceful nature makes them an ideal addition to Amazon biotope setups.

Feeding and Diet

These species have an unfussy diet, accepting a variety of live, frozen, and dried foods. It is advisable to include greenstuffs in their diet as they heavily feed on plant matter in their natural habitat.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Hemiodus Argenteus have not been widely bred in captivity, but they are believed to be egg-scatterers. Sexual dimorphism is not well-documented; however, mature females are likely to have a rounder belly compared to males.
