General Description
Hemiodus Atranalis, belonging to the Hemiodontidae family, is a peaceful species that can appear intimidating to smaller or quieter tank mates due to its size and activity. These fish are best kept in groups as they are natural shoaling species with a maximum size of around 9.0cm. They are characterized by a skittish nature when introduced to the aquarium but tend to settle down when kept together in larger numbers. Hemiodus species from Guyana, Peru, and Brazil are visually similar but can be distinguished by their unique patterns.
Aquarium Setup
For a biotope setup suitable for Hemiodus Atranalis, utilize a substrate of inert sand, with driftwood branches and roots along with some floating vegetation to create a less skittish environment. Additionally, they thrive in both planted and unplanted tanks with well-oxygenated water. Tank conditions should be monitored closely as they are sensitive to poor water quality, requiring strict maintenance. Ensure a well-fitted cover on the tank to prevent the fish from leaping out, as they are capable of surprising distances.
Behaviour
Hemiodus Atranalis is known for its peaceful demeanor but can be territorial towards significantly smaller or quieter tank companions. In larger Amazon biotope setups, these fish can coexist harmoniously with similarly-sized characins, cichlids like Geophagus and Heros, catfish, and Loricariids. Their shoaling nature emphasizes the importance of keeping them in groups for their well-being.
Feeding and Diet
These fish have an unfussy diet, readily accepting live, frozen, and dried foods. Incorporating greenstuffs into their diet is recommended, as they tend to consume plant matter in their natural habitat. Providing a varied diet ensures their nutritional needs are met and promotes overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
While not commonly bred in captivity, Hemiodus Atranalis is believed to be an egg-scatterer. The sexual dimorphism in these fish is not well-documented, but mature females may exhibit a rounder belly compared to males.
