General Description
The Giant White Spot Plec, scientifically known as Hypostomus Regani, belongs to the Loricariidae family under Hypostominae. Native to Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina, this species is an attractive and very hardy larger plec, reaching a maximum size of 40.0cm.
Aquarium Setup
To house the Giant White Spot Plec, a minimum tank size of 243 liters is required with a spacious environment and sandy substrate. The tank should include hiding spots, shade provided by large driftwood pieces and smooth rocks. Dim lighting is preferred, and a powerful filter is necessary due to the substantial waste production. While most plants may be uprooted, hardy species like java fern or Anubias that can be attached to decor, as well as floating varieties, may survive in the setup. For optimal conditions, maintain a water hardness of 5-10°dH, pH levels between 6.0-7.0, and a temperature range of 24-28°C.
Behaviour
The Giant White Spot Plec is recognized as a peaceful species suitable for cohabitation with larger characins, cyprinids, peaceful cichlids, and other catfish. It tends to be territorial with similarly sized bottom dwellers, particularly conspecifics, necessitating a very large tank if housing other large catfish in the same environment.
Feeding and Diet
This species is an unfussy eater that accepts a variety of foods. It is recommended to offer regular feedings of greens such as cucumber, courgette, and blanched spinach, alongside a mix of dried, live, and frozen food items.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction details of the Giant White Spot Plec remain unreported in the hobby, with unknown sexual dimorphism information currently available.
Habitat and Distribution
While specific habitat details are not readily accessible, the Giant White Spot Plec is naturally distributed across Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina.
