General Description
The Lamontichthys Llanero, a species from the Loricariidae family within the Loricariinae subfamily, is a rarely seen fish in the aquarium hobby. Originating from the Orinoco basin in Venezuela, it can grow up to 20.0cm in size.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, a suitable tank should mimic the fish's natural habitat with a stream-type setup, including gravel or sand substrate, driftwood, and rounded stones. While it can thrive in a planted tank, it requires well-oxygenated water with significant movement. Live plants may struggle in these conditions, and a moderate current within the tank is essential (see table for specific water conditions).
Behaviour
The Lamontichthys Llanero is generally non-aggressive; however, it is recommended not to house it in a general community tank due to its specialized requirements. It can coexist peacefully with conspecifics and other fish species like reophilic cichlids and certain peaceful characins.
Feeding and Diet
Being omnivorous, the Lamontichthys Llanero should have a diet rich in vegetable matter, both fresh (like cucumber slices, blanched spinach) and dried (such as algae wafers, spirulina tablets). It also accepts small live and frozen foods like bloodworms or daphnia, which should be regularly incorporated into its feeding routine.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Though successful breeding has been reported, limited information is available. These fish typically spawn on flat surfaces, sometimes even using the aquarium glass. Details about sexual dimorphism are currently unknown.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Lamontichthys Llanero inhabits shallow, flowing waters, where it seeks refuge among rocky substrates and driftwood. Their natural habitat in the Orinoco basin of Venezuela provides insights into their specific environmental needs.
