General Description:The Zebra Spiny Eel, scientifically known as Macrognathus Zebrinus, is a striking addition to aquariums, previously classified within the Mastacembelus genus. It is identifiable by sharp dorsal rays, which can puncture human skin.
Aquarium Setup:To accommodate a Zebra Spiny Eel, a tank of at least 250 litres is necessary (see table for water conditions). Provide sheltered areas with secure rocks and bogwood. A sandy substrate is crucial, as the eel enjoys burrowing. Avoid gravel due to its sharp edges. Plastic piping can offer additional hiding spots, while plants that attach to decor work well. A tight-fitting cover is vital to prevent escape.
Behaviour:This species thrives in communal tanks with larger peaceful species. It showcases territorial tendencies with its own kind, necessitating ample space if multiples are kept together.
Feeding and Diet:In the wild, the Zebra Spiny Eel preys on small fish and aquatic invertebrates. In captivity, it readily accepts dead alternatives like prawn, cockle, mussel, earthworms, and bloodworm. Patience may be needed initially to ensure the eel adjusts to feeding routines.
Reproduction & Dimorphism:Currently, there are no known successful captive breeding efforts. Mature females tend to have a thicker body compared to males, but no external characteristics differentiate the sexes significantly.
Habitat and Distribution:Native to Myanmar and Indonesia, the Zebra Spiny Eel inhabits river systems and swampy regions abundant in aquatic vegetation. These areas provide the necessary cover and habitat for the eel's natural behavior.
