General Description
The Fire Eel, scientifically known as Mastacembelus erthrotaenia, is a member of the Mastacembelidae family, commonly referred to as the Spiny Eel family. Despite their name, they are not true eels but elongated, tropical, freshwater fish. They feature numerous spines before the dorsal fin and are predominantly tan in color. With a maximum size reaching up to 61.0cm, these nocturnal predators have a moderate care level.
Aquarium Setup
A minimum tank size of 500 litres is recommended for accommodating the Fire Eel. A soft substrate is essential as these fish tend to dig and bury themselves, potentially uprooting plants and rearranging decorations. It is advisable to use a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape, especially as they are known to be escape artists. When selecting tank mates, opt for fish of similar size or larger, as the Fire Eel does not tolerate its own kind well (see table for specific water conditions).
Behaviour
Being semi-aggressive in temperament, the Fire Eel should be housed with caution, choosing tank mates carefully. Their nocturnal nature means they are more active during the night, displaying interesting behaviors such as digging in the substrate and seeking out hiding spots.
Feeding and Diet
As carnivorous creatures, Fire Eels thrive on live foods like earthworms and blackworms. Over time, they may also accept prepared tablet foods, krill, and ocean plankton. Ensuring a varied diet is crucial for their health and well-being.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Unfortunately, detailed information on the breeding habits of the Fire Eel is scarce. Their reproductive behaviors and dimorphic characteristics have not been extensively documented within the hobbyist community.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in tropical freshwater environments, Fire Eels are native to certain regions. They prefer water conditions with a pH range of 6.8-7.2, a temperature range of 23.9-27.8°C, and a moderate hardness level (KH of 10-15). Their distribution is limited to specific habitats, which should be replicated as closely as possible in captivity for their optimal health and well-being.
